# Best AI video editors for Mac in 2026

> TL;DR: The best AI video editor for Mac depends on the job. Vidiyo edits short videos by chat. Descript and Riverside suit spoken, long-form work. Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve are pro editors with AI tools. CapCut is the free all-rounder. Gling, Opus Clip and ClipsPal each automate one part of the edit.

"AI video editor" now covers very different products: pro editors with AI tools added, transcript editors with a chat assistant, clipping services and new editors where the AI makes the whole edit. This guide compares ten that run on a Mac, by what the AI actually does for you. We make Vidiyo, so it's listed first, with its limits stated as plainly as everyone else's.

## How did we evaluate these AI video editors?

We compared each editor on the same six questions, using each vendor's own pages as of 8 October 2026. We didn't score or rank them with numbers, because the right tool depends on the job.

1. **What does the AI do?** One-click tools, a chat assistant, or a fully automatic cut.
2. **What does the AI look at?** The transcript only, or the picture too.
3. **Does it run well on a Mac?** Native app, Apple Silicon support, or a browser.
4. **Where does footage go?** Stays local, or uploads to the vendor's cloud.
5. **How is AI paid for?** Included, credits, hours of footage, or an AI plan you already have.
6. **What are the limits?** Length, resolution and anything it can't do.

## What is Vidiyo best for?

Vidiyo is best for short videos you'd rather describe than edit. It's a Mac editor you drive by chat; we build it. Ask for cuts, word-by-word captions, a lower third, a counter on a number or music under your voice, and the assistant makes the edit on a timeline with layers and keyframes, then checks the frames it changed for faces, caption placement and loudness.

- **Price:** invite-only beta, free during the beta. Chat runs on your Claude Pro or Max plan or your ChatGPT plan.
- **Platform:** Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14+. Footage stays on your Mac.
- **Drawback:** 1080p at 30 fps, five-minute timelines, no speed control, and you need an invite.

## What is Descript best for?

Descript is best for podcasts and team editing. It lets you edit video by editing its transcript, with Underlord, a chat co-editor, for cuts, captions and audio. It runs on Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel, macOS 14+), Windows and the web, per [its system requirements](https://help.descript.com/getting-started/descript-system-requirements).

- **Price:** free; Hobbyist $16, Creator $24, Business $50 a month billed annually ([pricing](https://www.descript.com/pricing)).
- **Drawback:** cloud-based, and [Underlord charges AI credits](https://help.descript.com/hc/en-us/articles/36803785502221) per prompt and per tool. See [Vidiyo vs Descript](https://getvidiyo.app/compare/descript).

## What is Final Cut Pro best for?

Final Cut Pro is best for professional editing on a Mac. It's Apple's pro editor, with AI tools including [Transcribe to Captions, Magnetic Mask, Visual Search, Smooth Slo-Mo and Beat Detection](https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/). It exports up to 8K through Compressor.

- **Price:** $299.99 once, or $12.99 a month or $129 a year in Apple Creator Studio.
- **Platform:** Mac (macOS 15.6+) and iPad.
- **Drawback:** the AI assists; you still make the edit. See [Vidiyo vs Final Cut Pro](https://getvidiyo.app/compare/final-cut-pro).

## What is Adobe Premiere Pro best for?

Adobe Premiere Pro is best for editors already in Adobe. It transcribes on import so you can [cut from text](https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere.html), and adds Media Intelligence search, Generative Extend, Object Mask and Enhance Speech.

- **Price:** $22.99 a month on an annual plan, with 25 generative credits ([plans](https://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/plans.html)).
- **Platform:** Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.
- **Drawback:** a subscription and a real learning curve.

## What is DaVinci Resolve best for?

DaVinci Resolve is the best free professional editor here. It's free on Mac, Windows and Linux, handling up to Ultra HD at 60 fps. Its Neural Engine adds smart reframing, Magic Mask, voice isolation and auto colour, per [Blackmagic Design](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve).

- **Price:** free; Studio $295 once.
- **Drawback:** text-based editing and some AI tools need Studio, and the learning curve is steep.

## What is CapCut best for?

CapCut is the best free editor for social video. CapCut Desktop offers Auto Captions, Remove Filler Words, Auto Reframe and Smart Search, per [its AI features page](https://www.capcut.com/tools/desktop-ai-power), plus a huge template and effects library. A [Codex plugin](https://www.capcut.com/tools/capcut-x-codex) adds chat editing on PC outside the U.S.

- **Price:** free; the [US App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/capcut-video-editor/id1500855883) lists Pro at $19.99 a month.
- **Drawback:** unavailable in India, and prices vary by region. See [Vidiyo vs CapCut](https://getvidiyo.app/compare/capcut).

## What is Riverside best for?

Riverside is best for recording and podcasts. It records remote guests and edits by transcript, with Magic Clips and a Co-Creator chat agent, per [its pricing page](https://riverside.com/pricing). - **Price:** free (60 minutes a month); Starter $15; Pro $29 a month ([pricing](https://www.opus.pro/pricing)).
- **Platform:** web, plus iOS and Android apps.
- **Drawback:** a clipping tool billed by minutes of footage, not a general editor. See [Vidiyo vs Opus Clip](https://getvidiyo.app/compare/opus-clip).

## What is ClipsPal best for?

ClipsPal is best for multi-take talking heads on a budget. It cuts failed takes and silences, then adds zoom-ins, subtitles, visuals and sound. It runs on Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode or a free local model, and only the transcript goes to the AI, per [its site](https://clipspal.com/pricing).

- **Price:** $49 once for two Macs, rising as licences sell.
- **Platform:** Apple Silicon Mac, macOS 14+.
- **Drawback:** transcript-only AI, focused on talking heads. See [Vidiyo vs ClipsPal](https://getvidiyo.app/compare/clipspal).

## How do you choose the right AI video editor for your Mac?

Choose by your most common video, then check the limits. Short demos, launch videos and talking-head shorts: Vidiyo or ClipsPal. Podcasts and interviews: Riverside or Descript. Long videos you want to finish properly: Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, with Gling for the rough cut. Many shorts from long recordings: Opus Clip.

Then ask three questions. Are you comfortable uploading raw footage? Do you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT? Do you need 4K or videos longer than five minutes? If you do, Vidiyo isn't the right tool yet.

## Honest limits

- Vidiyo exports 1080p at 30 fps, and timelines max out at 5 minutes.
- Vidiyo runs only on Apple Silicon Macs (macOS 14+) and is invite-only during its beta.
- Vidiyo has no speed control and no client review link.
