> TL;DR: An animated chart in a video should make one point in a few seconds. Pick the chart by the sentence it supports: bars for rankings, a line for change over time, a donut for shares, two bars for before and after, a counter for a single number. Keep it to a few values and animate on the spoken line.

A chart in a video works differently from a chart in a report. Nobody can pause to study it, and it has to compete with your voice for attention. So a video chart makes one point, quickly, and gets out of the way. The animation exists to direct the eye: first the shape, then the value that matters.

## What makes a good animated chart in a video?

A good video chart makes one point that the speaker is saying at the same moment. It shows a few values, labels them directly, highlights the one that matters, and stays on screen long enough to read. If the chart needs a legend and a paragraph to explain it, it belongs in a blog post, not a video.

- **One point per chart.** "Most new viewers come from Shorts", not "here is our traffic breakdown".
- **Few values.** Group the long tail into "other".
- **Direct labels.** Put labels on the bars or line ends instead of in a legend.
- **Highlight the answer.** Dim the rest, or colour the one value that proves the point.
- **Sync to the line.** The bar grows when you say the number, not three seconds before.
- **Name the source** on screen in small type when the data isn't yours.

## Which chart should I use?

Choose by the sentence it supports. The words you are saying usually tell you the chart type.

| If you're saying | Use | How it should animate |
|---|---|---|
| "X beats Y" or "the top three are" | Bar chart | Bars grow one after another, then the winner stays bright |
| "Look how it changed" | Line graph | The line draws left to right, the last value pops |
| "Most of it is X" | Donut | The ring sweeps round, the main share counts up in the centre |
| "We went from X to Y" | Before and after | Two bars grow, a badge stamps the change |
| "We hit 12,400" | Number counter | The number counts up and settles |
| "We're 70% of the way there" | Progress bar or ring | The bar or ring fills toward the goal |

## How do I add an animated chart in any editor?

Build the chart as shapes and text on layers, then animate the bars or the line with keyframes. Alternatively, make the chart in a spreadsheet or design tool, export it as an image, and reveal it with a mask or a wipe. Building with shapes takes longer but lets each bar move on its own beat.

1. Write the one sentence the chart supports and find the moment you say it.
2. Draw the bars as rectangles or the line as a path, with labels as text layers.
3. Keyframe each bar's height from zero, staggered a few frames apart, with an ease-out.
4. For a line, animate a mask or the path's trim from left to right.
5. Count the number labels up alongside the bars if your editor supports it, or let them fade in at the end.
6. Dim the non-highlighted bars after the animation, and hold.
7. Keep text large: chart labels are the first thing to become unreadable on a phone.

## How do I add an animated chart in Vidiyo?

Tell the assistant what the chart should say and give it the numbers. It places an animated chart on its own layer, fills in the values, and anchors each beat to the words you speak, so the bars grow as you say them. If you trim the video later, the beats follow the words.

Things you can type:

- "Show a bar chart of where new viewers come from: Shorts 48, search 27, suggested 15, other 10. Highlight Shorts when I say it."
- "Line graph of subscribers by month, from the attached CSV."
- "Before and after: load time went from 3.2 s to 0.9 s."
- "Count up to 12,400 when I mention subscribers."

The chart templates:

| Template | What it does |
|---|---|
| Bar chart | Labelled bars grow in a stagger while values count up, then the other bars dim so one highlighted bar lands the point |
| Line graph | The line draws left to right with a glowing dot on the tip, then an end label pops at the last point |
| Donut split | The donut sweeps round, the first slice in the accent colour with its percentage counting in the centre and a legend beside it |
| Before and after | Two big bars grow with counting values and a guide line from the old level, then a change badge stamps on |

For single figures there are number templates: a count-up with a prefix and suffix, an odometer whose digits roll like a mechanical counter, a ring that sweeps to a percentage, and a progress bar that fills toward a goal.

Each chart uses your project's brand colours and fonts. Once placed, select it on the timeline to edit the rows, labels, title, highlighted value and timing in the inspector. In vertical video, charts sit above a speaker card in a band clear of the Reels, TikTok and Shorts interface. In wide, short spaces, the title moves beside the plot so the labels stay readable. The assistant also audits the scene for text that's too small or cut off by the frame.

The numbers are yours. The assistant uses what you type, what's in your script, or an attached CSV or text file. It doesn't look up your analytics, so check every value before you publish.

## How long should a chart stay on screen?

Long enough for the animation to finish and the takeaway to be read, then a beat more. Vidiyo's motion runtime treats 0.4 seconds plus 0.2 seconds a word as the minimum hold for settled text, so a chart with a title and four labels needs a few seconds after it finishes animating. If you find yourself wanting it on screen for ten seconds, the chart is probably doing too much. Split it into two, or cut values.

If the speaker keeps talking about the data, keep the chart up and let it change instead of cutting away: highlight a second bar, extend the line, or swap the end label. A chart that responds to the voice feels connected to what is being said, where a new chart every few seconds feels like a slide deck.

## What are common animated chart mistakes?

Too many values, labels too small, animation that ends after the speaker has moved on, and a chart that contradicts the voice. The last one is the most damaging: if you say "doubled" and the bars show a 40% rise, viewers stop trusting both. Read the chart against the script once before you export.

## Honest limits

- Charts are placed by the assistant; there is no chart gallery tab.
- Vidiyo exports at 1080p/30, and timelines max out at 5 minutes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What type of chart works best in a video?

The one that matches the sentence. Bar charts for rankings, line graphs for change over time, donuts for how a whole splits, two bars for before and after, and a single counting number when there is one figure to remember.

### How many data points should a video chart have?

As few as make the point. A viewer gets a few seconds and can't pause to study it, so a handful of bars or a short line with labelled ends reads better than a detailed dashboard.

### Can Vidiyo make animated charts?

Yes. Ask for one and the assistant places an animated bar chart, line graph, donut, before-and-after comparison or number counter, fills in your values and times each beat to the words you say. You edit the values, labels and colours in the inspector.

### Where do the numbers in Vidiyo's charts come from?

From you. The assistant uses the values you give it or that are in your script or attachments, such as a CSV file. Check every number before you publish, the same as you would in a slide.
