> TL;DR: Use one bold, high-contrast style per video: a heavy sans serif around 56 to 68 px on a 1080-wide frame, two to four words at a time, the spoken word in your accent colour, and a dark outline over busy footage. Place captions above the bottom quarter so the app's caption and buttons don't cover them.

The best caption style for a Reel or Short is the one people can read in a glance while scrolling with the sound off. That means big, heavy type, a few words at a time, strong contrast, and a spot on screen the app doesn't cover. Beyond that, style is a choice about tone. Below are the specs we use, then nine styles and when each one fits.

## What makes a caption style work on Reels and Shorts?

Captions on vertical video work when they're large, short, high-contrast and placed clear of the face and the app's interface. Viewers read them on a phone at arm's length, often in under a second per caption, so anything thin, long or low-contrast gets skipped.

These are the defaults we start from on a 1080 × 1920 frame:

| Property | Starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Font | A heavy sans serif (Inter Bold) | Thick strokes survive compression and small screens |
| Size | 56 to 68 px | Readable at arm's length without crowding the frame |
| Words per group | 2 to 4 | Readable in one glance |
| Lines | 2 at most | A third line drops into the app's caption area |
| Text colour | White | Highest contrast over most footage |
| Highlight | Your brand accent | One colour, used only for the spoken word |
| Outline | 6 to 8 px, black | Keeps white text legible over windows and light shirts |
| Vertical position | Lower third, above the bottom 24% | Below the face, above the app's caption block |

The two-line limit isn't only a social media habit. Accessibility guides like the [DCMP Captioning Key](https://dcmp.org/learn/captioningkey/597) and the [Netflix timed text style guide](https://partnerhelp.netflixstudios.com/hc/en-us/articles/217350977-English-USA-Timed-Text-Style-Guide) both cap captions at two lines.

## Where should captions sit on a vertical video?

Keep captions out of the top 12% and bottom 24% of the frame, and away from the right edge in the lower half. Those are the areas Vidiyo's safe-zone check treats as covered on Reels, TikTok and Shorts: the status bar and account row at the top, the username, caption and audio label at the bottom, and the like, comment and share buttons on the right.

Faces come first, though. The DCMP guidance says to move captions up when they would cover a speaker's face or important on-screen text, and the same applies here. If the face fills the lower part of the frame, captions go higher, or the picture moves. Drop a frame into the [safe-zone checker](https://getvidiyo.app/tools/safe-zone-checker) to see the overlays on your own video.

## Which caption styles work best, and when?

Pick the style by the voice of the video, then keep it for the whole video. These are the twelve presets in Vidiyo, with the spec each starts from and the kind of video it suits.

| Style | Spec | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Word highlight | Inter Bold 56, white on a dark plate, spoken word in a soft lime highlight | Talking heads, the default |
| Word pop | Inter Bold 68, white, no plate, spoken word pops | Upbeat explainers |
| Pill karaoke | Inter Bold 58, yellow pill slides under the spoken word, soft shadow | Friendly creator videos |
| Slam | Inter Bold 84, uppercase, warm off-white with an orange highlight, dark outline, words slam in | Hooks, hype, punchlines |
| Bold stack | Inter Bold 108, uppercase, tight lines, dark outline | 2 to 3 high-energy words |
| Wipe | Inter Bold 62, gold highlight, words wipe on | Clean, modern brands |
| Rise | Inter Semibold 60, words rise in | Calm, premium tone |
| Typewriter | Inter Medium 50, left-aligned, pale blue on a dark plate, letters type on | Tech, code, tutorials |
| Marker | Inter Bold 56, dark text on a lime marker block | Bold editorial looks |
| Editorial | Lora Bold 62, serif, no plate | Essays, stories, quieter brands |
| Subtitle | Inter Semibold 46 on a dark plate | Longer or calmer videos |
| Minimal | Inter Medium 44, no plate | Videos where captions should stay in the background |

Every preset is a starting point. Change the font, colours, size or outline, and the animation stays.

## How do I choose a style for my video?

Ask three questions: how fast is the speech, how loud is the brand, and what's behind the text? Fast, punchy speech suits fewer words and heavier styles. Calm speech suits more words and quieter styles. Busy backgrounds need an outline or a plate, whatever the style.

Three worked examples:

1. **A founder's 40-second product update, talking head, plain wall behind.** Word highlight, 3 words a group, highlight in the brand accent. The plate behind the text means no outline is needed.
2. **A hook-heavy Reel with jump cuts and B-roll over a busy street.** Slam for the first line, then Word pop at 2 words a group, 6 px black outline throughout.
3. **A one-minute coding tip over a screen recording.** Typewriter on its dark plate, 4 words a group, placed in the top half so it doesn't cover the code.

Example 2 mixes two styles, which breaks the one-style rule on purpose: the hook gets one loud treatment, then the rest of the video stays consistent.

## How do I set caption styles in Vidiyo?

Generate captions, pick a preset, then adjust it in the inspector or ask the assistant. Captions are word-timed and transcribed on your Mac, so the animated styles land on each word as it's spoken.

1. **Generate captions** in the Captions tab.
2. **Pick a preset** in the **Presets** tab. The preview shows the real animation.
3. **Adjust** font, size, colours and position in the inspector. Typography, outlines, transforms and fades sit in the expandable settings, along with **Words / group**.
4. **Brand it.** Set colours and fonts in the **Brand** tab and turn on **Follow brand** for captions. Changing the brand later restyles every linked caption in one undo step.
5. **Place it.** Ask: "Keep the captions clear of my face and the Reels buttons." The assistant measures the face in each shot, checks the platform overlays and on-screen text, and reports anything still covered.

Typical requests:

- "Use pill karaoke, three words at a time, highlight in our brand yellow."
- "Make the captions bigger and add a black outline, they're getting lost over the window."
- "Slam style for the first sentence only, word highlight for the rest."
- "Captions are covering the product in the second half. Move them to the top there."

## How do I style captions without Vidiyo?

Build one caption text style in a traditional editor and reuse it, or use the platform's in-app caption styles. Either way, apply the same specs: heavy font, 2 to 4 words, two lines at most, an outline over busy footage, placed above the bottom quarter.

In a traditional editor, save your caption look as a preset so every video starts from it, and check a frame from each section against the platform overlays before export. Word-by-word highlighting there usually means one text layer per group with keyframed colour, so budget time for it. In-app caption tools on the platforms are quicker but give you a few fixed looks, and the captions exist only on that platform.

## What are the most common caption style mistakes?

Most bad captions fail on size, length or placement, not on font choice:

- **Too many words.** Six-word groups turn captions into subtitles and slow the read.
- **Thin fonts.** Light weights break up after compression on a phone screen.
- **No outline over busy footage.** White on a white wall disappears.
- **Captions under the buttons.** The right rail and bottom caption block hide them.
- **Covering the face.** Viewers watch faces first; captions should move, not the face.
- **Too fast.** The DCMP suggests up to [160 words per minute](https://dcmp.org/learn/captioningkey/601) for upper-level material. If captions flash by, cut filler and pauses rather than shrinking the text.
- **A new style every video.** Consistency is part of being recognisable in a feed.

Get the specs right once, save them, and every video after that starts from a style that works.

## Honest limits

- Brand looks, including caption styles, are set per project.
- Caption fonts are Inter, Lora, or a font you import into the project.
- Vidiyo exports 1080p at 30 fps, and timelines max out at 5 minutes.

## Frequently asked questions

### What font size should captions be on Reels and Shorts?

On a 1080-wide vertical frame, around 56 to 68 px for word-by-word styles reads well on a phone. Big stacked styles go much larger, up to about 108 px, with fewer words per group.

### Where should captions go on a vertical video?

Above the bottom quarter of the frame and away from the right edge, where Reels, TikTok and Shorts put the caption text and action buttons. Never over the speaker's face.

### What's the best caption style for talking-head Reels?

Word highlight is the safest default: white bold text, three or four words at a time, the spoken word in your accent colour. Switch to Pill karaoke or Word pop if you want more energy.

### Should I use the same caption style on every video?

Yes, mostly. A consistent style makes your videos recognisable in a feed. Change it for a series or a different kind of video, not from one clip to the next.
