> TL;DR: Pick two or three formats you can repeat, such as a story to camera, a build-in-public screen video and a weekly changelog. Record them in one batch session, edit them in one sitting, and schedule them across the week. Talk about real decisions, mistakes and product moments in your own words. Consistency beats production value.

Founder-led video is the founder talking, on camera or over a screen, about what they're building and why. It works for small companies because a person is easier to relate to than a logo, and because a founder can say things a brand account can't: what went wrong, what they changed their mind about, what they're unsure of. The challenge is never the first video. It's the twentieth. This is the routine I use, as a designer who builds a product and has no video team.

## What is founder-led video content?

Founder-led video content is any video where the founder is the face or voice of the company. It covers stories, opinions, product demos, launch films and behind-the-scenes updates, posted to the founder's own accounts and the company's. What makes it founder-led isn't the format; it's that the founder decides what to say and says it in their own words.

## Which founder-led video formats work best?

Pick two or three formats you can repeat every week, and mix face-to-camera with screen-based ones. Repeatable formats mean you're never starting from a blank page, and the mix keeps your feed from looking the same every day.

| Format | On camera | Length | What it's for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Story to camera | Face | 45 to 90 s | A decision, a mistake, a customer moment |
| Opinion | Face | 30 to 60 s | A view about your market, stated plainly |
| Build in public | Screen and voice, small face bubble | 45 to 90 s | What you made this week and why |
| Changelog | Screen and voice | 30 to 60 s | What shipped, every week on the same day |
| Launch film | Face open and close, product in between | 45 to 90 s | A new product or a big release |
| Answer a question | Face | 30 to 60 s | A real question from a user or a comment |

Story and opinion videos build trust in you. Screen videos build trust in the product. You need both.

## What should a founder talk about on camera?

Talk about specific decisions and moments, not general advice. "Here's why we removed the free plan" beats "five tips for pricing". The more specific the story, the more it sounds like you, and the less it sounds like everyone else.

Prompts that work, with a sample opening line for each:

1. **A decision:** "We almost shipped this feature. Here's why we didn't."
2. **A mistake:** "I spent a month building something nobody asked for."
3. **A customer moment:** "A user emailed me a screenshot last week, and it changed our roadmap."
4. **A constraint:** "We have no video team, so here's how our videos get made."
5. **A number you can stand behind:** "We cut our onboarding from nine steps to three."
6. **A behind-the-scenes view:** "This is the part of the product that almost broke me."

Write the first line, then talk. Don't script the whole thing word for word unless it's a launch film; scripted founders sound like ads. Bullet points on a card are enough.

## How do I fit video into a founder's week?

Batch it: one recording session, one editing session, then schedule everything. Switching between building and filming every day breaks up your focus for both. A routine that works:

| When | What | Time box |
|---|---|---|
| Monday, 15 min | Write first lines and bullet points for 3 videos | Short |
| During the week | Screen-record anything you ship, as it ships | A minute each |
| Thursday, 45 min | Record all face takes in one sitting, same setup | One session |
| Thursday, 1 hr | Edit all three videos | One session |
| Thursday, 15 min | Write post copy and schedule the week | Short |

Recording setup can stay simple: a window in front of you for light, the camera at eye level, and a clip-on mic. Sound quality matters more than picture quality. There's more on that in [record yourself on camera](https://getvidiyo.app/blog/record-yourself-on-camera-tips).

## How do I make founder-led videos in Vidiyo?

Plan the ideas on the Board, record, then edit each video by describing it in chat and schedule it from the same app. The assistant runs on your existing Claude or ChatGPT plan, so there's no second AI subscription, and it watches the actual frames as well as the transcript.

1. **Plan on the Board.** Each idea is a card with a brief, script and date, moving from Idea to Scripting, Filming, Editing, Scheduled and Posted. The assistant can draft scripts and post copy on the cards.
2. **Record.** Use your phone or Mac camera, or a screen recording with narration, and import the files.
3. **First cut.** Import the take and ask: "Cut the pauses and false starts, keep my best take of each line, make it under 60 seconds for Reels." For bigger edits it proposes a plan you approve first.
4. **Polish.** Ask for word-by-word captions, a punch-in on the key line, a lower third with your name, or a quiet music bed. Each one lands on the timeline as a layer you can adjust.
5. **Review.** Press **C** and click the frame to leave a note, then **Fix with AI**.
6. **Schedule.** Export and schedule to Instagram, X, LinkedIn and YouTube through Buffer, after you review and approve each post. [Buffer's free plan](https://buffer.com/pricing) connects up to 3 channels.

We're planning our own launch this way: founder videos planned on the Board, edited in Vidiyo and scheduled through Buffer.

## How do I make founder-led videos without Vidiyo?

Use a notes app for ideas, your phone or Mac camera for recording, a traditional editor for cutting and captions, and a scheduler for posting. The routine above works the same. The editing session is where it gets slow: removing pauses, captioning and reframing for vertical and landscape by hand adds up across three videos a week. Templates help; save your caption style, lower third and end card so each video starts from them.

## How do I keep founder-led video going?

Lower the bar for each video and raise the bar for consistency. A few habits help most:

- **Keep a list of first lines.** Whenever something happens worth telling, write the opening line down. That list is next month's videos.
- **Reuse formats, not words.** Same structure, new story.
- **Post the imperfect take.** If the point lands, ship it.
- **Answer comments with videos.** A good question is a ready-made topic.
- **Check what people respond to,** then make more of that format, and less of the one nobody watches.

The founders who do this well aren't the most polished on camera. They're the ones who kept going long enough to get comfortable.

## Honest limits

- Vidiyo timelines max out at 5 minutes, and export is 1080p at 30 fps.
- Brand looks are per project.
- Buffer's free plan covers 3 channels.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is founder-led video content?

Videos where the founder is the face or voice of the company: stories, opinions, product updates and behind-the-scenes, posted from their own and the company's accounts.

### How often should a founder post videos?

As often as you can keep up for months, not weeks. Two or three videos a week from one batch session is a realistic start for most founders.

### Do founders need professional equipment?

No. A recent phone or Mac camera, a window for light and a cheap clip-on mic are enough. Sound matters more than picture.

### Can I make founder videos without editing skills?

Yes. In Vidiyo you describe the edit in chat, using your existing Claude or ChatGPT plan, and the assistant cuts pauses, adds captions, titles and music. You can still adjust everything by hand.
