> TL;DR: A jump cut feels jumpy when the framing is identical on both sides and the cut lands mid-thought. Fix it by cutting between sentences, keeping a little air around words, changing the framing across the cut with a small punch-in, and covering the worst ones with b-roll. In Vidiyo, ask "punch in on alternate cuts".

Every time you cut a pause or a retake out of a single shot, you make a [jump cut](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/jump-cut): the picture skips forward and your head moves without the camera moving. Talking-head video is built on them. The goal isn't to avoid jump cuts, it's to make each one look like a choice. Here's how.

## Why do jump cuts feel jumpy?

A jump cut feels jumpy when nothing but your position changes across it. Same framing, same background, and your head suddenly a few centimetres to the left: the eye reads that as a glitch. Cutting in the middle of a thought, or clipping the end of a word, makes the glitch obvious because the sound also stumbles.

So there are two causes to fix: the picture (identical framing) and the timing (where the cut lands). Fix the timing first, because a well-timed cut needs less visual help.

## Where should you place a jump cut?

Place jump cuts between sentences or ideas, not inside them, and keep a little air around the words. A cut at the end of a thought sounds like a natural pause. A cut inside a sentence sounds like a stutter, however clean the picture is. A few frames of breath on each side keep speech sounding human.

Practical rules:

- Cut after the last word of a sentence, before the next one starts.
- Keep roughly a tenth of a second after the last word and a little more before the next.
- Don't cut out a breath right before a key line; it sets up the line.
- If you must cut mid-sentence, cut on a hard consonant, not a vowel.

## How do you hide a jump cut?

Change the framing across the cut, or put something else on screen over it. The most common fix is a punch-in: scale one side of the cut slightly larger so it reads as a second camera angle. B-roll, a graphic or a full-screen text beat over the cut works too, and adds information while it hides the join.

| Technique | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Punch-in on one side | Scale one side about 10 to 18% larger | Most cuts in a single-camera talking head |
| Alternate framing | Switch between normal and punched-in at each cut | A run of several cuts close together |
| B-roll cutaway | Cover the cut with footage of what you're talking about | When you name something the viewer can't see |
| Graphic or text beat | A full-screen number, list or title over the cut | Key points and statistics |
| Purposeful transition | A zoom blur or whip | A change of topic, not every cut |
| Leave it raw | Do nothing | Fast, casual content where the jump is the style |

## How do I make jump cuts look intentional in Vidiyo?

Ask the assistant to punch in on alternate cuts, and it changes the framing across each jump with your face kept in frame. Vidiyo's quality checks flag raw jump cuts with identical framing after every edit, so the assistant knows which joins still need work, and so do you.

1. Tighten the video first: "cut the pauses and keep the best takes".
2. Ask "punch in on alternate cuts so the jumps don't show". The assistant scales one side of each raw jump about 10 to 18%, staying at or below 1.2x on 1080p footage so it doesn't look soft.
3. For a key line, ask "punch in on the line about pricing". It splits that line out and scales it, with the face kept centred and about a third from the top.
4. For cuts where you name something, ask "cover the jump cut with b-roll". It searches the included stock library, places a muted clip of a few seconds over the join, and credits the author in its reply.
5. Use transitions sparingly: "add a zoom blur into the second section" marks a change of topic.

Every punch-in is an ordinary keyframed transform, so you can open the clip and change the scale by hand. See [punch-in zooms for talking heads](https://getvidiyo.app/blog/punch-in-zoom-talking-head) for more on getting the amount right.

## How do I fix jump cuts by hand in another editor?

Use the scale control on alternate clips. After each cut, select the clip on one side, raise its scale by about 10 to 18%, and reposition it so your eyes sit in roughly the same place in the frame. Repeat for every other clip so the framing alternates between normal and closer.

1. Make your cuts first, so the clip boundaries are final.
2. Select every second clip after a jump.
3. Set the scale to about 110 to 118% and nudge position so your face stays centred.
4. Check each punched-in clip for a cropped forehead or chin.
5. For key moments, place a cutaway on a track above the speaker, a few seconds long, centred on the cut.
6. Play the run of cuts back to back at full speed.

On older or lower-resolution footage, keep the scale toward the low end; enlarging a small source makes it soft.

## Can sound make a jump cut smoother?

Yes. Letting the audio of one shot run a moment past the picture cut, or start a moment before it, softens the join because the ear doesn't hear the cut where the eye sees it. Editors call these the [L-cut](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/l-cut) and the [J-cut](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/j-cut). They work best at cutaways, where the picture changes but your voice carries on.

A sound effect on a cut also helps: a soft whoosh into a graphic or a b-roll shot turns the join into a deliberate moment. Keep effects for visual events, not every cut.

An honest note on Vidiyo: a clip's picture and its own dialogue stay together, so trims and splits keep them in sync. That means you don't build an L-cut by offsetting a clip's audio from its picture. Instead, put the cutaway on a track above the speaker, so your voice keeps running underneath while the b-roll plays, which gives the same effect.

## When should you leave a jump cut alone?

Leave a jump cut raw when the style of the video is fast and casual, when the framing change would be distracting, or when the cut is so small it's barely visible. Plenty of creators use raw jump cuts on purpose; the pace is part of the voice. What matters is that it's a choice.

A useful test: watch the cut once at full speed without looking for it. If you didn't notice it, move on. If you did, change the framing or cover it. And if the jump is caused by a cut in the middle of a sentence, fix the timing before you reach for a zoom. For the silence-cutting step that creates most of these cuts, see [how to remove silences on Mac](https://getvidiyo.app/blog/remove-silences-from-video-mac).

## Honest limits

- Vidiyo's zooms are keyframed punch-ins, not cursor-follow or face-tracking camera moves.
- There's no speed control, so speed ramps aren't available to smooth a cut.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why do my jump cuts look bad?

Usually because the shot is identical on both sides of the cut, so your head twitches to a new position. Cutting mid-sentence or clipping a word makes it worse. A change in framing or a cutaway makes the same cut look deliberate.

### How much should I zoom to hide a jump cut?

A small change is enough: about 10 to 18 percent larger on one side of the cut. Larger zooms on 1080p footage start to look soft, so Vidiyo stays at or below 1.2x on 1080p sources.

### Should I put a transition on every jump cut?

No. A transition on every cut draws more attention than the jump. Save transitions for a change of topic or energy, and use framing changes or b-roll for ordinary cuts.

### Are jump cuts bad?

No. They're standard in talking-head video and many viewers expect them. They only become a problem when they're accidental: identical framing, clipped words, or a cut in the middle of a thought.
