> TL;DR: Agentic video editing means an AI agent edits your video the way an assistant editor would: it reads the footage, plans, makes edits with real editing tools, checks the result and fixes what's wrong, in a loop. One-click AI features are different: they run one fixed operation, like auto-captions, and stop.

"Agentic" gets attached to a lot of products right now, so it helps to be precise. In video, the word means one thing: the AI isn't a single button, it's a worker with access to the editor's tools, and it decides which ones to use, in what order, and whether the result is good enough.

## What does agentic video editing mean?

Agentic video editing is when an AI agent carries out an edit by itself using an editor's tools, in a loop of reading, planning, acting and checking. You describe the outcome ("make this a tight 45-second reel"), and the agent works out the steps, makes them, looks at what it made and fixes problems before reporting back.

The [glossary entry](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/agentic-video-editing) has the short definition. The important parts are the tools and the loop. Without tools, an AI can only suggest edits. Without the loop, it makes one pass and hopes. An agentic editor has both, which is why it can handle requests that need judgment, like "the intro drags".

## How is it different from AI features like auto-captions?

A one-click AI feature runs a single fixed operation, while an agent chooses and combines operations to reach a goal. Auto-captions always do the same thing. An agent asked to "make this easier to watch" might tighten pauses, add captions, punch in on key lines and lower the music, then check that none of it covers your face.

| | One-click AI feature | Agentic editing |
|---|---|---|
| Input | A button or a setting | A request in plain words |
| Scope | One operation | Whatever the request needs |
| Order of steps | Fixed | Chosen by the agent |
| Checks its own result | No | Yes, after each step |
| Handles vague notes ("it drags") | No | Finds the measurable cause and changes that |
| Good for | Fast, predictable jobs | Multi-step edits and revisions |

Neither is better in every case. If you only want captions, a button is faster. If you want an edit, an agent saves you from pressing twenty buttons in the right order.

## What does the agent loop look like?

The loop has five steps: read, plan, act, verify and report. In Vidiyo the agent follows a written playbook for this, and the host enforces the parts that matter, like checking every edit and refusing edits while a plan waits for your approval in plan mode.

1. **Read.** The agent reads an edit decision list of the timeline, the transcript as sentences with word IDs, and any comments you left.
2. **Plan.** For a big job it shows a plan card with steps and two lists kept apart: what you asked for, and what it assumed (length, music, which take).
3. **Act.** It makes edits through intent operations like "delete these words" or "punch in on this line". The editor computes exact frames, padding and face-safe positions from measurements.
4. **Verify.** Quality checks run after every edit: captions over faces, cropped faces, dead air, a slow opening, raw jump cuts. The agent looks at rendered frames or a contact sheet, and fixes errors before moving on.
5. **Report.** A short reply: what changed, the new duration, anything still flagged, and any moment you should check by ear.

## What makes an editing agent trustworthy?

An editing agent is trustworthy when its work stays visible, reversible and checked. That means it uses the same timeline you do, groups each request into one undo, shows its assumptions before a big change, asks when a choice is yours, and proves the result with checks it actually ran rather than claims.

In practice, look for these:

- **Same tools as you.** In Vidiyo the agent can do everything you can, and anything it builds (a title, a keyframe, a caption style) stays editable by hand.
- **One undo per request.** ⌘Z takes back the whole request, not one cut at a time.
- **Questions with buttons.** When a decision is genuinely yours, like which hook or which take, it asks with two to four suggested answers and stops.
- **Memory you can see.** Say "always use two-word captions" and it saves that as a preference, and tells you it did.
- **A second opinion.** A critic reviews the cut with fresh context, on request or before export, and pins findings to the timeline as [comments you can hand back](https://getvidiyo.app/features/comments-fix-with-ai).

## What does agentic editing look like in Vidiyo?

You type a request next to the timeline and watch the edits arrive as normal clips, captions and layers. A real example: you import a four-minute talking head and type "make this a 60-second reel for Instagram". The agent proposes a plan, you approve it, and it builds the cut in steps.

Behind that request, the agent reads the story view to find the strongest hook and repeated takes, removes warm-up and pauses, keeps one clean take of each line, adds captions placed clear of your face, punches in on key lines, adds music ducked under your voice, then runs checks and looks at a contact sheet of the risky moments. You can interrupt at any point with a note, or leave a comment on a frame and press **Fix with AI**.

The agent runs on your own Claude plan (through Claude Code) or ChatGPT plan (through Codex), so there's no second subscription. Transcription and rendering stay on your Mac.

## Can you do agentic editing without a dedicated editor?

Yes, in a basic form. A coding agent such as Claude Code or Codex, running in a folder with your footage, can transcribe with an open-source tool, write a cut list, render with ffmpeg and pull stills to check its work. That's a genuine agent loop, and it's free beyond your plan.

What you lose is the editor around it. There's no timeline to adjust by hand, no undo history, no measurements of faces or caption positions unless you script them, and each revision is a re-render. It's a good fit for developers and one-off jobs, and a lot of plumbing for weekly videos.

## What are the limits of agentic video editing?

Agents are slower and less predictable than one-click features, because they make choices. A produced edit takes many steps and uses a real share of your plan's usage. The agent can pick a hook you wouldn't, and it can't hear audio, so it works from loudness measurements rather than listening.

The fix for most of this is to stay in the loop: use plan mode for big changes, keep requests specific, and review before you export. ## Honest limits

- Agentic edits take longer than a one-click filter, because the agent reads, edits and checks in several steps.
- Each request uses your Claude or ChatGPT plan's usage limits.
- The agent can't hear the mix; it balances audio from loudness measurements.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between an AI video editor and an agentic video editor?

Many AI video editors add one-click features, such as captions or silence removal, that run once and stop. An agentic editor gives an AI agent the editing tools themselves, so it can plan a multi-step edit, check its own result and keep going until the checks pass.

### Is agentic video editing fully automatic?

It can be, but it works best with you in the loop. In Vidiyo you can ask for a plan first, approve it, and review the result. The agent asks you when a choice is genuinely yours, such as which take to keep.

### Can I undo what an AI agent did to my video?

In Vidiyo, yes. Every request is grouped into one undo step, and every edit the agent makes is an ordinary edit on the timeline that you can change by hand.

### Do I need a special AI subscription for agentic editing in Vidiyo?

No. Vidiyo's agent runs on a Claude Pro or Max plan through Claude Code, or a ChatGPT plan through Codex. There's no separate AI subscription.
