> TL;DR: Write it in two columns, picture and voice, and plan about 150 spoken words per minute. Open on the outcome, set up one situation, walk through three to five steps naming each control as you use it, show the result, then give one next step. Read it aloud with a timer and cut until it fits.

A product demo script decides what the viewer sees and hears at every moment, before you record anything. It's the cheapest place to fix a demo: cutting a sentence in a script takes seconds, cutting it from a recorded and edited video takes much longer. Here's the format, how long to make it, a full sample, and the rules that make it sound like a person talking.

## What format should a product demo script use?

Use two columns: what's on screen and what's said, side by side, with rough timings. Every line of voice should have a picture next to it. If a line has nothing to show, it's probably filler, and if a screen has no line, viewers won't know why they're looking at it.

| Time | On screen | Voice | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 6 s | The finished report | "This client report took me ninety seconds." | |
| 6 to 14 s | Empty dashboard | "Here's how, starting from nothing." | |

The third column is optional. Use it for titles, labels and step numbers, and keep each to a few words.

## How long should a product demo script be?

Plan about 150 spoken words per minute of video. That's a natural pace for narration over a screen; slow down to around 130 when the UI needs time to be read, or go up to 160 for a brisk delivery. Vidiyo's assistant uses the same 130 to 160 range when it writes a script to a target length.

| Video length | Spoken words | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 30 seconds | About 75 | Single feature, social clip |
| 60 seconds | About 150 | Launch film, feature announcement |
| 90 seconds | About 225 | Short product walkthrough |
| 2 minutes | About 300 | Website demo |
| 3 minutes | About 450 | Sales or onboarding demo |

The [video length calculator](https://getvidiyo.app/tools/video-length-calculator) does the arithmetic for a script you've already written.

## How should a product demo script be structured?

Open on the outcome, set up one situation, walk through three to five steps, show the result, then give one next step. This order works because the viewer knows the destination before the journey starts, so every step has a purpose.

1. **Outcome (5 to 10 s).** Show the finished thing first. "This is a client report I built in ninety seconds."
2. **Situation (5 to 15 s).** One concrete, relatable case. "Say a client asks how last month went."
3. **Steps (60 to 80% of the time).** Three to five, each one action and one result.
4. **Result (5 to 15 s).** Back to the finished thing, now that viewers know how it was made.
5. **Next step (5 s).** One action: try the template, book a call, start free.

## What does a full demo script look like?

Here's a complete 90-second script for a fictional analytics product. It runs to about 220 words.

| Time | On screen | Voice | On-screen text |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 6 s | Finished client report, scrolling | "This client report took me ninety seconds to build." | |
| 6 to 14 s | Email from a client asking about results | "Here's the situation. A client wants to know how last month went, and they want it today." | |
| 14 to 30 s | Click New report, choose the Monthly template | "I click New report and pick the Monthly template. It already has the charts clients ask about most: traffic, sign-ups and revenue." | "1. Pick a template" |
| 30 to 48 s | Connect the data source, choose the client's account | "Next, I connect their analytics. One click, choose the account, and every chart fills in with last month's numbers." | "2. Connect data" |
| 48 to 68 s | Edit the summary text, punch in on it | "The summary at the top is written for me. I change one line, because I know sign-ups dipped for a reason, and I want to say why." | "3. Edit the summary" |
| 68 to 80 s | Click Send, client's inbox | "Then Send. The client gets a link, not a PDF, so the numbers stay live." | "4. Send" |
| 80 to 90 s | The report in the client's view, then the URL | "That's a full monthly report in ninety seconds. The Monthly template is free on every plan. Try it today." | "Start free" |

What makes this script work:

- **It names each control as it's clicked.** "I click New report" tells viewers where to look.
- **Every step has a result.** "Every chart fills in" is the payoff of "connect".
- **There's one human moment.** Changing the summary line shows judgement, which makes the product feel like a tool, not a magic trick.
- **The claims are checkable.** "Free on every plan" should be true, or it shouldn't be there.

## How do I make a script sound spoken, not written?

Write the way you talk, then read it out loud and fix anything you stumble on. Written sentences are longer, more formal and full of words nobody says. A few rules catch most of it:

- **Short sentences.** One idea each. If you need a breath in the middle, split it.
- **Contractions.** "It's", "you'll", "doesn't". Spoken English uses them.
- **Say "I" or "you", not "users".** "You pick the template" beats "users can select a template".
- **No feature lists.** "Sync, share, export and collaborate" sounds like a brochure. Show one.
- **Numbers as you'd say them.** "Ninety seconds", not "90s".
- **Cut warm-up.** Delete "so", "basically", "in this video I'm going to show you".

Then the read-aloud test: read the whole script at your normal pace with a timer. If it's over, cut whole sentences, starting with the least visual one.

## How do I write and record a demo script in Vidiyo?

Draft the script on a Board card, ask the assistant to tighten it, then import your recordings and cut the demo in the same project. Scripts, recordings and the edit stay together.

1. **Create a card** on the Board for the demo, with a short brief: audience, length, the workflow.
2. **Draft with the assistant.** "Write a 90-second demo script for the Monthly report workflow, two columns, picture and voice, about 220 words." Attach notes, release notes or a spec as a text or Markdown file. Rewrite it in your own words.
3. **Check the length.** Paste the script into the [script length calculator](https://getvidiyo.app/tools/video-length-calculator), or ask the assistant to cut it to the time you need.
4. **Record.** Capture the screen and your narration or face takes with the apps you already use, then import the files. Narration is transcribed on your Mac, so it can be cut and captioned by its words.
5. **Cut to the script.** Ask the assistant to cut the screen recordings to the script and remove the pauses and retakes.

## How do I write a demo script without Vidiyo?

Use a two-column table in any document, read it aloud with a phone timer, and record from a second screen. That's all a script needs. If you're recording voiceover, a printed copy with line breaks at each breath is easier to read than a dense paragraph. Mark the words to stress in bold, and leave a gap in the voice wherever the screen needs a moment on its own.

A good script is short, specific and visual. Write it once, cut it twice, then record.

## Honest limits

- Vidiyo timelines max out at 5 minutes, so keep a single demo script under about 750 words.
- A teleprompter isn't built in yet; read from a second screen or your notes.

## Frequently asked questions

### How many words is a one-minute demo script?

About 150 spoken words, at a natural speaking pace. Plan 130 if you speak slowly or the screen needs time to breathe, and up to 160 for a brisk delivery.

### Should a demo script be word for word?

For voiceover, yes: writing it out keeps it tight and lets you time it. For face-to-camera parts, bullet points often sound more natural than a memorised script.

### What format should a video script use?

A two-column table: what's on screen on the left, what's said on the right, with timings. Add a third column for on-screen text if you use titles or labels.

### Can AI write a product demo script?

It can write a solid first draft from your notes or release notes. In Vidiyo, the assistant writes scripts onto your Board cards. Rewrite it in your own words before recording, and check every claim.
