> TL;DR: Design for the smallest size it will be seen at: one clear subject, three to five words at most, high contrast, and a face or object that shows the video's promise. Upload a 16:9 JPG or PNG. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 with a minimum width of 640 pixels, and 9:16 for Shorts.

A thumbnail is usually seen at the size of a postage stamp, next to a title, among a dozen others. Most thumbnail advice comes down to that one fact. Below are YouTube's current requirements, the design habits that survive small sizes, and how to make and test versions with or without an AI tool.

## What are YouTube's thumbnail requirements?

Upload a 16:9 JPG or PNG for videos, or 9:16 for Shorts. YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for videos, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, and your account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails at all.

| Requirement | Videos | Shorts |
|---|---|---|
| Aspect ratio | 16:9 | 9:16 |
| Recommended size | 3840 × 2160 | 2160 × 3840 |
| Minimum | 640 pixels wide | 640 pixels tall |
| Formats | JPG or PNG | JPG or PNG |
| File size limit | 2 MB on mobile, 50 MB on desktop | 50 MB on desktop |
| Where to add it | YouTube Studio or the app | YouTube Studio on a computer only |

## What makes a good YouTube thumbnail?

A good thumbnail shows one idea that makes the title more interesting, and it reads instantly at small size. One subject, few words, strong contrast. It should make a promise the first 30 seconds of the video keep, or viewers leave and the click works against you.

1. **One focal point.** A face, a product or one object. If you need to explain where to look, there is too much in it.
2. **Three to five words, or none.** Words should add tension the title doesn't already carry. Don't repeat the title.
3. **Big, heavy type.** Thin fonts disappear at small sizes. Test by viewing it at about the width of your thumb on a phone.
4. **Contrast in light and colour.** A bright subject on a dark background, or the reverse. Avoid colours that blend with YouTube's own interface in both light and dark mode.
5. **A readable face.** If you show yourself, the expression should match the video's emotion: surprise, doubt, relief. Crop tight enough that the eyes are clear.
6. **Keep the corners clear.** YouTube puts the video length in the bottom-right corner, so don't put key text there.
7. **Stay consistent.** A recognisable layout or colour across your channel helps returning viewers spot your videos.

## How do I test which thumbnail works better?

Make two or three versions that differ in one thing (the face, the words or the background), then compare them over the same period. Change only one variable at a time, or you won't know what made the difference. Look at click-through rate together with watch time, since a thumbnail that gets clicks but loses viewers early is overpromising.

YouTube Studio reports impressions click-through rate for each video. The [thumbnail CTR glossary entry](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/thumbnail-ctr) explains what the number does and doesn't tell you. Judge a thumbnail against your own channel's history, not against numbers quoted for other channels.

## How do I make thumbnails without design software?

Grab a strong frame from your video, cut yourself out, add a short line of text and a solid background. Any image editor with background removal and text can do this. Many phone apps can too.

1. Scrub the video for a frame with a clear expression and sharp focus.
2. Export it as a still at full resolution.
3. Remove the background so the subject stands alone.
4. Place the subject on one side and the words on the other.
5. Export at 16:9 as JPG or PNG and check it at small size before uploading.

## How do I make a YouTube thumbnail in Vidiyo?

Open the thumbnail studio, pick a shape, describe the thumbnail and the AI generates a complete image from your video. Every version stays on one strip, so you can compare, refine from any version and set the one you like as the cover. Thumbnails use your own OpenAI API key, with a Google Gemini key as a fallback, and each image is billed to that key.

1. Click the empty slot at the end of the strip and choose 16:9, 9:16 or 1:1.
2. Describe it: "me looking surprised on the left, 'I deleted half my app' on the right, dark background".
3. Add references from the attach menu: a frame from the video for your face, an image, a note, or a Pixabay photo. Pick a style reference if you want a particular look.
4. Watch the card move through reading the video, planning, painting and checking. Up to three requests run at once.
5. To change something, press **C** and pin comments on the image ("make this text bigger", "less clutter here"), then **Refine with comments**. Hold Space to compare with the version it came from.
6. Click **Set as cover** on the one you want. Exports and publishing use it, and you can download it as PNG or JPEG.

Generated thumbnails are complete images, not editable layers, so changes happen by refining. OpenAI generations come out at 1792 × 1008 for 16:9, which is well above YouTube's minimum but below its 3840 × 2160 recommendation. For a YouTube upload, add the thumbnail in YouTube Studio, because Buffer can't set YouTube thumbnails. Instagram Reels can use the cover directly when you [schedule with Buffer](https://getvidiyo.app/blog/schedule-videos-with-buffer).

## What thumbnail mistakes should I avoid?

The common mistakes all come from designing at full size on a big monitor. Shrink the thumbnail to phone size before you decide anything, and most of these show up at once:

- **Too many elements.** Three faces, an arrow, a logo and a sentence compete with each other and none of them reads.
- **Small or thin text.** If you need to squint at full size, it is invisible in the feed.
- **Low contrast.** A dark face on a dark background turns into a blob.
- **A promise the video doesn't keep.** A shocked face over a calm tutorial earns the click and loses the viewer.
- **Text in the bottom-right corner,** where the video length sits.
- **A different style every week,** so returning viewers don't recognise your videos.

Fix one of these at a time and compare against your channel's own numbers.

## Should the thumbnail and title be written together?

Yes. Write them as a pair, before or during the edit, not after. The title carries the searchable words and the thumbnail carries the emotion or the visual proof. If both say the same thing, one of them is wasted space. If they contradict each other, viewers don't know what they're clicking.

## Honest limits

- Thumbnails need your own OpenAI or Gemini key, and every generation is billed to it.
- Generated thumbnails are flat images, not editable layers. Changes are made by refining.
- YouTube thumbnails can't be set through Buffer; upload them in YouTube Studio.

## Frequently asked questions

### What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels at 16:9 for videos and 2160 × 3840 at 9:16 for Shorts, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Use JPG or PNG. The file limit is 2 MB when uploading from mobile and 50 MB from a computer.

### Why can't I upload a custom thumbnail?

Your YouTube account must be verified to upload custom thumbnails. For Shorts, custom thumbnails can currently only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer.

### How many words should a thumbnail have?

As few as the idea needs, usually three to five. The title sits next to the thumbnail, so the image doesn't need to repeat it. Words should add something the title leaves out.

### Can Vidiyo make YouTube thumbnails?

Yes, with your own OpenAI API key, or a Google Gemini key as a fallback. The thumbnail studio generates complete images from your video's frames, keeps every version, and lets you pin comments on a version and refine from them. Each generation is billed to your key.

### Can Vidiyo upload the thumbnail to YouTube through Buffer?

No. Buffer's API takes no thumbnail image for YouTube, so download the thumbnail from Exports and add it in YouTube Studio after the video goes out.
