# Can ChatGPT edit my video?

Lots of people already ask ChatGPT to help with videos: a hook, a script, a list of cuts to make. The gap is everything after that advice. Someone still has to find the frames, make the cuts, place the captions and check that nothing covers a face. Vidiyo closes that gap by letting ChatGPT, through Codex on your Mac, work a real editor itself.

## Can ChatGPT edit a video on its own?

Not as an editor. In chat, ChatGPT can write your script, suggest cuts or look at a screenshot, but it has no timeline to edit, no view of how the picture looks after a change and no way to hand you a finished, checked MP4. Vidiyo gives it those, so the suggestions become edits you can watch and undo.

## How do I connect ChatGPT to Vidiyo?

You need an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later, a ChatGPT plan and a Vidiyo invite. Vidiyo uses Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, as the bridge to your ChatGPT account.

1. Install Codex. In Terminal, run `npm install -g @openai/codex` or `brew install --cask codex`.
2. Run `codex login` and choose **Sign in with ChatGPT**.
3. Open Vidiyo and go to Settings → Assistant (or the first-run setup). Choose **Check again** if Vidiyo was already open.
4. Import your footage and type a request in the AI panel.

Vidiyo checks the installed Codex version and runs a short compatibility check for that version and your chosen model the first time. If your Codex version isn't one Vidiyo supports yet, chat stays off and tells you to update Vidiyo or Codex, rather than running with tools it hasn't verified. The model picker shows the models your ChatGPT account offers.

## What can I ask ChatGPT to do?

The same things you'd ask an editor. Every request is grouped into one undo step, and a short preview renders under the reply.

## What does ChatGPT see, and how does it work?

ChatGPT gets your request, the word-timed transcript (made on your Mac), a readable edit list of the timeline, measured faces and loudness, and the rendered frames it asks for. It doesn't receive your video files. After every edit, Vidiyo runs quality checks and returns the findings, so ChatGPT can see that a caption covers a face or a title runs off the frame and fix it.

Vidiyo runs a dedicated Codex process for chat. It replaces Codex's coding instructions with Vidiyo's editing playbook, keeps the sandbox read-only and disables shell commands. ChatGPT works only through Vidiyo's editing tools, which change the project through the same validated engine as the editor. For background research it can use web search.

On Claude, Vidiyo adds read-only helpers (a story analyst, a moment scorer, a researcher) and optional shell access. On ChatGPT there are no helpers, so the assistant does that work itself with the same read-only tools. The critic review still runs: in a separate pass where every editing tool is refused, so it can comment but not change anything.

## What does it cost?

Nothing beyond the plan you have. Vidiyo uses your ChatGPT plan through Codex, so there's no second AI subscription and no API key for chat. OpenAI [includes Codex](https://learn.chatgpt.com/docs/pricing) in its ChatGPT plans and sets usage per five-hour period; how many requests you get depends on the model and the size of the task. Long edits use more than short ones.

Vidiyo itself is in an invite-only beta and free during the beta. Thumbnail generation is separate: it uses your own OpenAI or Gemini API key, billed to that account.

## Is my footage private?

Yes. Import, transcription, rendering and export run on your Mac. ChatGPT receives your request, transcript excerpts, the edit list and the still frames it inspects, and OpenAI's own terms apply to that traffic. Your ChatGPT sign-in stays with Codex. ## What are the limits?

ChatGPT can only do what the editor can. Timelines stop at 5 minutes, export is 1080p at 30 fps, there's no speed control, and zooms are keyframed punch-ins rather than cursor-follow. Colour tools are basic. Vidiyo runs on Apple Silicon Macs only. ChatGPT can draft posts and captions, but it can't approve or publish anything. That stays with you.
