# Can Claude edit videos?

> TL;DR: Claude can't edit video files on its own: it has no timeline and can't render or export a video. With Vidiyo it can. Vidiyo is a Mac video editor that connects to Claude Code on your Claude Pro or Max plan, and gives Claude your transcript, the frames it asks to see and real editing tools. No second subscription.

Claude is very good at reasoning about a script, a story or a rough cut you describe to it. What it lacks on its own is a body: a timeline to edit, a way to look at the picture as the viewer will see it, and a renderer to turn decisions into an MP4. Vidiyo supplies those, on your Mac, and lets Claude drive them with the plan you already pay for.

## Can Claude edit videos by itself?

No. Claude isn't a video editor: it has no timeline and can't render or export a video. In a terminal, Claude Code can write commands for a tool like ffmpeg, but that's editing blind. It can't see whether a caption covers your face or a cut lands mid-word. Vidiyo gives Claude a real editor and the eyes to check its work.

| | Claude on its own | Claude in Vidiyo |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Timeline | None | Real timeline with layers, keyframes, captions, music |
| Sees the picture | Only still images you share | Rendered frames and annotated contact sheets it asks for |
| Knows what was said | Only a transcript you give it | Word-timed transcript, made locally |
| Makes the edit | Writes instructions or commands | Applies validated edits you can undo in one step |
| Exports | No | 1080p, 30 fps MP4 on your Mac |

## How do I set up Claude for video editing in Vidiyo?

You need an Apple Silicon Mac on macOS 14 or later, a Claude Pro or Max plan, and a Vidiyo invite. Setup takes a few minutes.

1. Install Claude Code. In Terminal, run `curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash`. This is the install command from [Anthropic's setup guide](https://code.claude.com/docs/en/setup).
2. Run `claude auth login` and sign in with your Claude Pro or Max account.
3. Open Vidiyo. The first-run setup checks for Claude Code. Choose **Check again** if you installed it while Vidiyo was open.
4. Import your footage and type a request in the AI panel.

If you have both Claude Code and Codex installed, you can switch between them in Settings → Assistant. Before you choose, Vidiyo uses Claude Code when it finds it. You can pick the Claude model in the composer, and each model passes a one-time compatibility check before it edits.

## What can I ask Claude to do to my video?

Anything the editor can do, in plain words. Each request is grouped into one undo step, and a short preview of the result renders under Claude's reply.

- "Cut the ums and long pauses."
- "Start on the strongest line."
- "Add bold word-by-word captions."
- "Put a counter on \"160 GB\"."
- "Show the product above me while I explain it."
- "Add a whoosh on every cut and keep the music under my voice."
- "Review it before I export."

For bigger jobs, switch to plan mode. Claude shows a plan card listing its steps, what you asked for and what it assumed, and waits for your approval.

## What does Claude see when it edits?

Claude doesn't get your video file. It gets what it needs to make good decisions: the word-timed transcript (made on your Mac), a readable edit list of the timeline, measured face positions and loudness, and rendered frames it asks for. Contact sheets show several moments at once, with faces, captions and on-screen text outlined.

After each edit, Vidiyo runs quality checks and hands Claude the findings: captions over faces, cropped faces, dead air, raw jump cuts. On Claude, read-only helpers handle specialised work: a critic that reviews the cut with fresh eyes, a story analyst that finds repeated takes and false starts, a moment scorer and a researcher. None of them can change your project. The critic's notes appear as comments on the timeline.

## How does Vidiyo connect to Claude?

Each request runs Claude Code in print mode on your Mac, signed in with your account. Vidiyo removes Claude Code's built-in tools, ignores your own Claude Code settings, hooks, plugins and other servers, and serves Vidiyo's editing tools from a local endpoint protected by a per-session token. The tool list is checked on every request, and a mismatch turns chat off rather than running with the wrong tools.

With shell access on (the default, in Settings), Claude can also run commands in a work folder inside the project, for jobs like converting a file. Commands that touch credentials, system settings or installs are refused, and anything Vidiyo can't confirm as safe shows you an Allow once or Deny card first.

## What does it cost to edit video with Claude?

Nothing extra. Vidiyo uses your Claude Pro or Max plan through Claude Code. Anthropic's Pro and Max plans [share usage limits](https://support.claude.com/en/articles/11145838-using-claude-code-with-your-pro-or-max-plan) across Claude and Claude Code, so Vidiyo requests count toward the same limits as your other Claude use. Long edits use more than short ones.

Vidiyo itself is in an invite-only beta and free during the beta. The only feature that needs another key is thumbnail generation, which uses your own OpenAI or Gemini API key.

## Is it private?

Your footage stays on your Mac. Import, transcription, rendering and export all run locally. Claude receives your request, transcript excerpts, the edit list and the still frames it inspects, and Anthropic's terms apply to that traffic. Your Claude sign-in stays with Claude Code. During the beta, Vidiyo stores the text of your conversations with images removed, so we can find where the assistant goes wrong. See [private, local editing](https://getvidiyo.app/features/private-local-editing) for the full list.

## What are the limits?

Claude in Vidiyo can only do what the editor does. Timelines stop at 5 minutes, export is 1080p at 30 fps, there's no speed control, and zooms are keyframed punch-ins rather than cursor-follow. Colour tools are basic. Vidiyo runs on Apple Silicon Macs only. And Claude can draft social posts, but it can't approve or publish them. That stays with you.

If you'd rather use ChatGPT, Vidiyo works the same way through Codex. See [ChatGPT video editor](https://getvidiyo.app/chatgpt-video-editor).

## Honest limits

- Needs a Claude Pro or Max plan signed in to Claude Code. The free Claude plan doesn't include Claude Code.
- Every request counts toward your Claude plan's usage limits.
- Timelines max out at 5 minutes, and export is 1080p at 30 fps.
- Mac only: Apple Silicon on macOS 14 or later.
- Thumbnails don't run on Claude. They need your own OpenAI or Gemini API key.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can Claude edit videos?

Not on its own, because Claude has no timeline and can't render or export video. With Vidiyo, a Mac video editor, Claude edits a real timeline: it reads your transcript, looks at rendered frames and makes cuts, captions, graphics and audio changes you can undo.

### How do I edit video with Claude Code?

Install Claude Code, sign in with your Claude Pro or Max account, then open Vidiyo on your Mac. Vidiyo detects Claude Code and uses it for chat, so you edit by typing requests like "cut the long pauses" in Vidiyo's AI panel.

### Do I need a separate subscription to use Claude in Vidiyo?

No. Vidiyo uses your existing Claude Pro or Max plan through Claude Code, and usage counts toward that plan's limits. Vidiyo itself is free during its invite-only beta.

### Does the free Claude plan work with Vidiyo?

No. Vidiyo's chat runs through Claude Code, and Anthropic's free claude.ai plan doesn't include Claude Code. You need a Pro or Max plan, or you can use a ChatGPT plan through Codex instead.

### Does Claude see my whole video?

Claude sees transcript excerpts, the project's edit list and the still frames it chooses to inspect. Your video files stay on your Mac, and Anthropic's own terms apply to what Claude receives.

### Can Claude export the finished video?

Yes, when you ask for an export or approve one. Vidiyo renders a 1080p, 30 fps MP4 on your Mac and then reviews the file, pinning any issues it finds as comments.
