# How do I connect ChatGPT to Vidiyo?

> TL;DR: Install the Codex CLI with npm or Homebrew, run codex login and choose Sign in with ChatGPT using a Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise plan. In Vidiyo, set Chat runs on to ChatGPT and click Check again. Vidiyo uses Codex's sign-in, and usage counts toward your ChatGPT plan's limits.

Vidiyo's assistant can run on your ChatGPT plan through Codex, OpenAI's command-line tool. Vidiyo starts its own Codex process and uses the sign-in Codex already has. You don't paste an API key and you don't pay Vidiyo for AI.

## What do I need?

You need a ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise plan and the Codex CLI on the same Mac. Chat is optional; editing and export work without it.

## How do I install and sign in to Codex?

Install Codex from Terminal with npm or Homebrew, then sign in with ChatGPT. Open Terminal and run one of these:

```sh
npm install -g @openai/codex
```

```sh
brew install --cask codex
```

Then sign in:

```sh
codex login
```

Choose **Sign in with ChatGPT** and use the account with your plan. OpenAI's documentation for the [Codex CLI](https://developers.openai.com/codex/cli) covers installation in more detail.

## How do I connect it in Vidiyo?

Choose ChatGPT, then click **Check again**. In the first-run **Set up Vidiyo** dialog, pick "Use my ChatGPT subscription". Later, go to **Settings → Assistant** and set **Chat runs on** to **ChatGPT**.

| Status | What to do |
|---|---|
| "Codex is not installed yet" | Install it with one of the commands above |
| "installed but not signed in" | Run `codex login` |
| "is not supported yet. Update it, then check again." | Update Codex to a supported version |
| "installed and signed in" | You're done |

Vidiyo checks each Codex version before using it. If yours is newer or older than the versions we've tested, the status says so; update Codex or Vidiyo.

## How is ChatGPT different from Claude in Vidiyo?

Both use the same editing tools, so the results are the same kind of edit. The differences are in the extras:

| | Claude (Claude Code) | ChatGPT (Codex) |
|---|---|---|
| Editing tools | All | All |
| Helper reviewers (critic, story analyst) | Yes | No, the assistant reviews its own work |
| Shell access for downloads and conversions | Yes, with risky commands asking first | No |
| Models | A fixed list Vidiyo supports | Your account's Codex models |

You can switch any time in Settings → Assistant. Each project keeps its Claude conversations and Codex threads separately.

## What does ChatGPT see?

Your request, transcript excerpts, the project's edit list and the still frames the assistant inspects go to OpenAI under your plan. Your footage files stay on your Mac. OpenAI's own terms apply to that traffic. See [Privacy and data](https://getvidiyo.app/docs/privacy-and-data).

## What if chat stops working?

"Codex is not signed in. Run `codex login` in Terminal, then try again." means the sign-in expired. "The Codex usage limit for your ChatGPT plan was reached. Editing remains available." means you've used your plan's allowance for now. More in [Troubleshooting](https://getvidiyo.app/docs/troubleshooting).

## Steps

1. Open Terminal and install Codex: npm install -g @openai/codex (or brew install --cask codex).
2. Run codex login and choose Sign in with ChatGPT.
3. In Vidiyo, open Settings → Assistant (or the first-run setup) and set Chat runs on to ChatGPT.
4. Click Check again. The status should read installed and signed in.
5. Open a project, pick a model in the composer and type a request.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which ChatGPT plans work with Vidiyo?

ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business or Enterprise, signed in to the Codex CLI with Sign in with ChatGPT. Vidiyo uses that sign-in, so there's no second AI subscription.

### Is ChatGPT as capable as Claude inside Vidiyo?

It uses the same editing tools, so cuts, captions, motion, audio and publishing drafts all work. Codex has no helper subagents and no shell access in Vidiyo; it does that review work itself with read-only tools.

### Do I need an OpenAI API key for chat?

No. Chat runs on your ChatGPT plan through Codex. An OpenAI API key is only used for the optional thumbnail generator.

### Which models can I pick?

The composer lists the models your signed-in ChatGPT account offers through Codex. If a model hasn't been checked with Vidiyo yet, it runs a one-time compatibility check first.
