# How does editing by chat work in Vidiyo?

> TL;DR: Type what you want in the chat panel and the assistant edits the real timeline: cuts, captions, layouts, motion, music and more. It reads the transcript and checks actual frames as it works. Each request undoes in one step with ⌘Z, a short preview renders under its reply, and plan mode lets you approve bigger edits first.

Chat is the fastest way to make big changes in Vidiyo. The assistant uses the same timeline and tools you do, so anything it makes stays editable by hand.

## What can I ask for?

Ask for the result you want, the way you'd brief an editor. Short, specific requests work best. Some that work well:

- "Cut the ums and long pauses."
- "Start on the strongest line."
- "Put a counter on 160 GB."
- "Show the product above me."
- "Cover the jump cut with B-roll."
- "Keep the music under my voice."
- "Warm up the color."
- "Review it before I export."

It can cut and tighten, punch in on lines, change layouts, add and style captions, insert motion graphics, add music and sound effects, color-correct, find stock media, write post captions and draft a thumbnail if you've added an image key. More examples are in the [prompt library](https://getvidiyo.app/prompts).

## How does the assistant check its work?

It reads, edits, then verifies. Before changing anything it reads an edit list and the transcript. After every batch of edits, Vidiyo runs quality checks on the composed frame: faces, caption placement, text inside the frame, and the Reels, TikTok and Shorts interface areas in vertical video. Problems come back to the assistant to fix before it replies. Ask "review it" for a fresh critique.

## What do I see while it works?

Tool steps appear live, then fold into "Used N tools" when the turn ends. When the reply changed the timeline, a short preview renders under it; click to play it full size. Under each finished reply you can rate the result from 1 to 5 stars, which tells us where the assistant goes wrong.

While it works you can send another message to steer it. When it finishes, press **Tab** to use its suggested next request.

## How do plans and approvals work?

With **Plan before large edits** on (Settings → Assistant), the assistant shows a plan card: what it will do, what you asked for and what it assumed. Click **Approve** to run it or **Change…** to adjust it. With it off, the assistant edits straight away.

## How do I undo or change a result?

Press ⌘Z to undo everything a request did, in one step. ⇧⌘Z redoes it. You can also fix one detail by hand: drag a clip, retime a caption or change a value in the inspector. The assistant sees your manual changes next time.

## How do comments work with the AI?

Pin a note on a frame and click **Fix with AI**. Press **C** and click the video to comment on a point, or **N** to comment at the playhead. A thread's **Fix with AI** sends that note to the assistant, and the Comments panel can send all open comments at once. See [Comments and Fix with AI](https://getvidiyo.app/features/comments-fix-with-ai).

## Which plan does chat use?

Chat runs on your own Claude or ChatGPT plan, so requests count toward that plan's limits. Set it up in [Connect Claude](https://getvidiyo.app/docs/connect-claude) or [Connect ChatGPT](https://getvidiyo.app/docs/connect-chatgpt).

## Steps

1. Open a project with footage and open the AI panel on the right.
2. Type a request in plain words, for example: Cut the ums and long pauses.
3. Watch the tool steps as it works; send another message to steer it if needed.
4. Play the preview that renders under the reply, or scrub the timeline.
5. Keep it, adjust by hand, or press ⌘Z to undo the whole request.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does the AI only read the transcript?

No. It reads the transcript and also inspects still frames it picks, measured face positions and audio loudness, then checks the composed frame after each edit. That's how it can keep captions off a face or notice a frozen shot.

### Can I undo what the AI did?

Yes. Everything one request changed groups into a single undo step, so ⌘Z removes the whole request. You can also undo individual manual edits as usual.

### Can I ask it to plan before editing?

Yes. Turn on Settings → Assistant → Plan before large edits. The assistant then proposes a plan and waits for you to approve or change it before touching the timeline.

### What happens if I edit by hand while the AI is working?

A manual edit interrupts the running request. What it already finished stays in undo history, and you can send a new request when you're ready.

### Does it remember my preferences?

Yes. The assistant keeps project and personal memory, which you can read and edit in Settings → Memory.
