# How do I download the language pack?

> TL;DR: Open Settings → Transcription, choose your Spoken language, and click Download next to Language pack. It's about 575 MB, downloads once and covers every language in the list plus Detect automatically. English uses its own smaller model. Both run on your Mac, so audio never leaves it.

Vidiyo transcribes speech on your Mac with Whisper. English has a dedicated model. Every other language shares one multilingual model, the language pack, which you download once.

## Which model do I need?

English needs only the English model; any other language needs the language pack.

Each model downloads once and works offline after that.

## How do I download it?

Download it from Settings, or let the first transcription fetch it. Go to **Settings → Transcription**, set **Spoken language**, and a **Language pack** row appears with a **Download** button. Progress shows in that row, and you can cancel. When it finishes you'll see "Language pack ready."

The Download button is available once a project is open. If you skip it, the first transcription in that language downloads the pack before it starts.

## How do I switch languages?

Change **Spoken language** in Settings → Transcription, then regenerate captions. The setting applies to new transcriptions. Transcripts are cached per model and language, so switching back doesn't redo work you already have.

## What about Hindi and Hinglish?

Hindi transcribes in Devanagari script. That's right for Hindi captions, but Hinglish speech (Hindi and English mixed) often needs words fixed by hand. Settings suggests trying **Detect automatically** for Hinglish. After transcribing, edit the words in the Captions tab's transcript; your fixes stay attached to each word through later cuts. ## What if the download fails?

A failed download shows "Whisper model download failed (…). Check internet access and retry." Check your connection and click Download again. Vidiyo checks every downloaded model against a pinned size and checksum, and refuses a file that doesn't match. More in [Troubleshooting](https://getvidiyo.app/docs/troubleshooting).

1. Open a project, then open Settings from the home view.
2. In Transcription, set Spoken language to your language, or Detect automatically.
3. Next to Language pack, click Download. Progress shows in the row.
4. Wait for Language pack ready, then generate captions as usual.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which languages does the language pack cover?

The Spoken language list offers English plus 29 others: Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Kannada, Malayalam, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Thai, plus Detect automatically.

### Do I need the language pack for English?

No. English uses its own model (about 490 MB), which downloads the first time you transcribe. The language pack is only for other languages and automatic detection.

### Can I transcribe Hinglish?

Partly. Hindi comes out in Devanagari script, so Hinglish speech needs some words fixed by hand. In Settings, try Detect automatically for Hinglish, then correct words in the caption transcript.

### Is transcription sent to the cloud?

No. Both models run on your Mac with Whisper, and your audio never leaves it. The download is the only network step, and each model is checked against a pinned size and checksum.
