> Definition: A cold open is a technique of starting a video or episode directly with a scene or moment, often taken from later in the story, before the title, intro or any setup, to hook the audience immediately.

A cold open drops the viewer straight into something interesting. No logo, no "welcome back", no title: the video starts mid-moment, often with the most dramatic or surprising part, and only then rolls into the intro and the story from the beginning. It's one of the oldest hooks in television and one of the most common on YouTube.

## How does a cold open work?

A cold open works by giving the viewer a payoff before asking for their patience. Typical structures:

1. **Flash-forward.** Show a moment from the climax ("and that's when the server went down"), then cut to the start.
2. **In-progress action.** Start in the middle of something happening, with context coming later.
3. **The result first.** Show the finished product or outcome, then explain how you got there.

After the cold open, many videos use a short [title card](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/title-card) or branded intro to mark where the main story begins.

## How are cold opens used on YouTube and in product videos?

On YouTube, a cold open is usually a short teaser of the video's best moment, followed by the intro. It sets up a question the viewer wants answered, which carries them through the slower setup. In product and launch videos, the cold open is often the product in action, a dramatic before-and-after or a customer's reaction, before the founder explains anything.

## Cold open vs hook: what's the difference?

A cold open is a structure; a [hook](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/video-hook) is a function. Any strong opening line can be a hook, even if it's the first thing you said in the recording. A cold open specifically rearranges time, pulling a later moment to the front or starting mid-scene. Every cold open is meant to be a hook, but not every hook is a cold open.

## What's an example of a cold open?

A 4-minute YouTube video about moving a startup's servers starts with a few seconds from minute three: the founder staring at a dashboard saying, "Every single request is failing." Cut to black, a title card, then: "Three weeks earlier..." and the story begins. The viewer stays to find out how it went wrong.

## Can Vidiyo make a cold open?

Yes, if you ask for one. You can say "open with the line about the server failing, then go back to the start", and the assistant moves that moment to the front on the timeline, where you can adjust it. By default it won't rearrange your story: its opening procedure starts on the strongest line near the beginning, and if it finds a stronger hook later in the video, it suggests that moment with its timestamp and asks before moving it, since rearranging can change what you meant.

## Frequently asked questions

### Where does the term cold open come from?

From television, where many shows open with a scene that plays before the title sequence and opening credits. The audience is dropped into the action 'cold', without introduction.

### Is a cold open the same as a hook?

A cold open is one kind of hook. A hook is anything that grabs attention at the start; a cold open specifically does it by starting with a scene, often a teaser of a later moment, before the intro.

### Do cold opens work in short-form video?

In a sense, every good short-form video is a cold open, because there's no room for an intro. A literal flash-forward to a later moment works too, as long as it's very short.
