> Definition: Kinetic typography is text animated over time, with words moving, scaling, appearing and disappearing in sync with speech, music or the story, so the type itself expresses rhythm and emphasis.

Kinetic typography makes words perform. Instead of sitting still on screen, text arrives on the beat, grows on the important word, gets struck through when the speaker changes their mind, or stacks up phrase by phrase. It's the technique behind lyric videos, many launch films and the big animated words you see around creators' heads in short-form videos.

## Where does kinetic typography come from?

Kinetic typography comes from film title design. Saul Bass's opening titles for Alfred Hitchcock's *North by Northwest* (1959) are recognised as the first feature film to use it extensively, with credits that flew in from off-screen, and Bass used a similar technique in *Psycho* (1960) ([source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinetic_typography)). Software later made it practical for anyone, and it moved from cinema titles into ads, music videos and social video.

## How is kinetic typography used in short-form and product videos?

In short-form and product videos, kinetic typography emphasises what's said rather than repeating all of it. Common patterns:

- **Hero words.** One big word lands as the speaker says it, with smaller words around it.
- **Treatments.** A word gets struck through, highlighted, underlined or boxed to show contrast.
- **Lists.** Items appear one by one in braces or chips as they're spoken.
- **Numbers.** A figure rolls up like an odometer as it's mentioned.

The craft is timing. Each word should appear on its spoken syllable and stay long enough to read.

## Kinetic typography vs word-level captions: what's the difference?

[Word-level captions](https://getvidiyo.app/glossary/word-level-captions) transcribe everything that's said, one word at a time, usually in a fixed band. Kinetic typography picks a few words and designs them: different sizes, positions, fonts and effects. Captions are for following along; kinetic type is for emphasis. Many videos use both, with the kinetic words reserved for the key lines.

## How do you make kinetic typography in Vidiyo?

In Vidiyo you ask for kinetic type in chat, for example "make 'ten times faster' big around my head when I say it". The assistant uses a kinetic type kit built into the motion runtime. It times each word to when you actually say it (from the local transcript), lays the phrase out around your face so it never covers it, and supports treatments like strike, highlight, underline, letter boxes, braces and logo chips. With a speaker cutout, the hero word can even sit behind your head. For per-word captions, Vidiyo also has animated caption styles such as karaoke pill, slam, wipe and typewriter.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are animated captions kinetic typography?

Partly. Word-by-word captions that pop or highlight on each spoken word borrow from kinetic typography. Full kinetic typography goes further: words change size, position and style to express meaning, not just to transcribe.

### What was the first use of kinetic typography?

Saul Bass's title sequence for Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest (1959) is widely credited as the first feature film to use it extensively, with credits flying in from off-screen.

### Does kinetic typography work in talking-head videos?

Yes, in small doses. A few key words animated around the speaker's head, timed to when they're said, add energy. Animating every sentence makes the video tiring to watch.
