> Definition: A rough cut is an early, complete version of an edit in which the chosen footage is assembled in story order and roughly trimmed, before fine timing, graphics, colour and sound mixing are finished.

The rough cut is the first time an edit becomes watchable from start to finish. It isn't pretty: transitions are plain, the audio is unmixed, graphics may be placeholders. But the story is there, in order, with the takes chosen. It's the version you watch to decide whether the video works before spending time on polish.

## Where does the rough cut fit in the editing process?

The rough cut sits between gathering material and finishing it. A typical process:

1. **Assembly.** All usable footage laid out in order.
2. **Rough cut.** Best takes chosen, story shaped, obvious slack removed.
3. **Fine cut.** Every edit tightened, B-roll and graphics placed, pacing refined.
4. **Picture lock.** No more changes to timing.
5. **Finishing.** Colour, sound mix, captions, export.

In film and TV these stages are formal, with reviews between each. For YouTube and short-form, they often blur together, but the order still holds: get the story right before polishing.

## How is a rough cut used for YouTube, short-form and product videos?

For creator and product videos, the rough cut is where you answer the big questions. Does it start on the hook? Is anything said twice? Is the middle dragging? Is the call to action clear? For a talking-head video, the rough cut usually means picking the best take of each line, removing false starts and long pauses, and cutting tangents. Fixing structure here is cheap; fixing it after graphics and captions are placed is not.

## Rough cut vs fine cut: what's the difference?

A rough cut gets the content right and a fine cut gets the timing right. In a rough cut, a cut might land a few frames late or a pause might be slightly long; that's fine. In a fine cut, every edit point, caption, graphic and sound level is deliberate.

## How do you make a rough cut in Vidiyo?

In Vidiyo, a rough cut is usually your first request: "make a first cut, keep the best takes, remove pauses". The assistant reads the whole transcript, proposes a plan of what it will remove and why, keeps one complete take of each repeated line, removes acoustically confirmed pauses and false starts, and keeps every word that carries meaning. It reports the length before and after and anything it left for you to decide. From there you refine on the timeline, or pin comments at specific moments and use **Fix with AI**.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the difference between an assembly, a rough cut and a fine cut?

An assembly puts all usable footage in order. A rough cut chooses the takes and shapes the story with rough timing. A fine cut tightens every edit and adds polish until the picture is locked.

### How long should a rough cut be?

Usually longer than the final video, because it still includes material you might cut. It's normal to trim a meaningful amount between the rough cut and the final.

### Should a rough cut have music and captions?

It can have temporary ones to judge pacing, but they shouldn't be the focus. The rough cut is for story and structure; finishing details come later.
