> TL;DR: Paste timestamps and titles in any common format, or titles with section lengths, and this formatter writes clean YouTube chapter lines for your description. It checks YouTube's rules as you type: the first chapter at 00:00, at least three chapters in order, and every chapter at least 10 seconds long.

This formatter turns a rough list of sections into YouTube chapter lines you can paste straight into your description. It accepts timestamps before or after the title, in brackets or with dashes, and it can build timestamps from section lengths. As you type, it flags every line that would stop YouTube from showing chapters.

## What does the YouTube chapters formatter do?

The formatter reads each line, finds the time and the title, and writes them back in one consistent format: `00:00 Intro`. Bullets, numbering, brackets and separators like dashes or pipes are removed. Videos over an hour switch to `1:02:45` style for the later chapters.

It then checks the list against YouTube's rules and shows each problem next to its line number, with a preview table of start times, chapter lengths and titles. A **Copy** button puts the result on your clipboard. Nothing you paste leaves the browser.

## How do I use the formatter?

Paste your list, fix anything flagged, and copy the result.

1. Choose what the times on each line mean: **Start times** (when each chapter begins) or **Section lengths** (how long each part runs).
2. Paste one chapter per line. `0:00 Intro`, `Intro - 0:00`, `(0:00) Intro` and `Intro 40s` all work.
3. Optionally enter the **Video length**, so the last chapter and any late timestamps get checked too.
4. Fix every line marked as a problem. If the first chapter doesn't start at 00:00, one click adds an Intro line.
5. Press **Copy** and paste the lines anywhere in your YouTube description.

## What are YouTube's rules for chapters?

YouTube shows chapters from your description only when the list meets three rules from its [video chapters help page](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en).

| Rule | What the formatter checks | Source |
|---|---|---|
| The first timestamp starts with 00:00 | The first chapter's time is zero. Offers to add an Intro line if not | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en) |
| At least three timestamps, in ascending order | Counts chapters and flags any time that isn't later than the one before | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en) |
| Each chapter is at least 10 seconds | Measures the gap to the next chapter, and to the video's end if you give its length | [YouTube Help](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9884579?hl=en) |

The same page notes that YouTube may also create automatic chapters, which creators can turn off, and that some videos aren't eligible, for example when the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.

## Why do chapters matter?

Chapters show the structure of a video and let viewers jump to the part they came for. On a tutorial or a product walkthrough, someone looking for "Pricing" or "Setup" can go straight there instead of scrubbing blind through the progress bar.

They also help outside YouTube. Google says it may show [key moments](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/structured-data/video) for a YouTube video based on the timestamps and labels in its description, which gives each chapter a chance to appear in search. Clear, specific chapter titles do more work than "Part 2".

Good chapter titles describe the payoff of each section in a few words. Keep them short enough to read on the progress bar, and write them for the viewer scanning, not for yourself.

## Does Vidiyo write chapters for me?

Not yet. Vidiyo writes post copy for each platform from what the video actually says, including YouTube Shorts titles and descriptions, and you can schedule posts through Buffer from its [content calendar](https://getvidiyo.app/features/content-calendar-and-scheduling). Chapter lists aren't generated automatically today, so use this formatter to check yours before you publish.

If you cut one long recording into several pieces, [repurposing one video for every platform](https://getvidiyo.app/blog/repurpose-one-video-for-every-platform) covers how to plan the parts.

Interactive tool: open https://getvidiyo.app/tools/youtube-chapters-formatter in a browser to use it. It runs on the page and uploads nothing.

## Honest limits

- The formatter checks YouTube's written rules. YouTube can still choose not to show chapters on a video.
- Without the video length, it can't check that the last chapter is 10 seconds or longer.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why aren't my YouTube chapters showing?

Usually one rule is broken: the first timestamp isn't 00:00, there are fewer than three timestamps, they aren't in ascending order, or a chapter is shorter than 10 seconds. YouTube also withholds chapters on some videos, for example when the channel has an active strike.

### What format do YouTube chapters need?

One chapter per line in the description, with the timestamp and then the title, like 00:00 Intro. Use minutes and seconds, or hours, minutes and seconds for long videos.

### Do YouTube chapters have to start at 00:00?

Yes. YouTube's help page says the first timestamp must start with 00:00. Without it, none of the chapters appear.

### Can I turn section lengths into timestamps?

Yes. Switch the formatter to Section lengths and enter each part with its length, such as Intro 40s or Demo 2m 30s. It adds them up into start times and checks every section is at least 10 seconds.

### Do chapters help my video in Google Search?

They can. Google says it may show key moments for a YouTube video based on the timestamps and labels in its description.
